KAYLP, 이스트베이노인회 설날잔치 개최 - SFKorean 뉴스 - 로컬 뉴스

청소년 리더쉽 프로그램(KAYLP, 총괄디렉터 조진숙)의 학생과 학부모 회원들은 2월 9일 오클랜드에 있는 EB 노인회를 방문하여 새해를 맞아 치매예방 프로그램을 진행하였다.

이번 봉사에서 한가지의 큰 변화가 있었는데 그것은 바로 학부모님들이 아닌 11학년 학생 회원들이 프로그램을 진행하는겄이었다. 한국말이 서툴지만 학생들은 학부모님들의 별 다른 도움없이 프로그램을 잘 진행 하고 EB 노인회 어르신들과 원할하게 소통하는것을 보고 뿌듯하였다고 말하였다.

이번 봉사에서는 넌센스 퀴즈를 하여 맞추시는 분들에게 상품을 드리고, 이번 황금돼지해에 복을 많이 받으시라는 의미에서 색종이로 복주머니를 만들어 어르신들의 성함을 쓰는 활동을 준비하였다. 복주머니가 굉장히 만들기 어렵다고 하였는데 학생들과 학부모님의 도움으로 잘 마무리 되었다

준비한 모든 활동이 끝난 후 어르신들에서 식사 배식을 해드린후 다음달 다시 만날기로 인사를 드리고 봉사를 마쳤다.

On Saturday February 9, 2019, the Korean American Youth Leadership Program (KAYLP) held a Lunar New Year themed event for the elderly at the East Bay Korean American Senior Service Center in Oakland.

This event was entirely student-led. For the introduction, students explained the program and an overview of the day. Then, two others led a group exercise designed to help prevent alzheimer's and keep the elderly strong.

Afterwards, one student hosted a quiz show, where participants won prizes and collaborated with others. One of the highlights of the day included an intricate origami craft, where the students assisted the elderly in creating a 복 주머니 (bok ju muh ne), a traditional Korean handbag that is said to bring luck. Everyone who participated was delighted with the craft and were pleased with their carefully designed pieces of art. One woman in particular flushed with happiness as she noted, “this would be a perfect gift for my grandson.”


Overall, the day was full of fun activities and quality bonding time, where both the students and the elderly celebrated the new year. Knowing that we as students can bring the elderly happiness and joy warms our hearts, and motivates us to continue volunteering with KAYLP. From our experiences, we have also found a connection and newfound appreciation for the elderly in our community.
