지난 16일 청소년 리더쉽 프로그램(KAYLP, 총괄디렉터 조진숙)의 청소년들은 이스트베이 노인회에서 치매 예방을 위한 하트 종이접기, 사칙연산, 한자성어 퀴즈 등 다양한 활동과 어르신들에게 점심을 배식하는 행사를 진행하였다.
청소년들은 매달 토요일마다 이스트베이 노인회를 방문하여 봉사를 하며 어르신들이 살아온 인생에 대한 지혜와 교훈도 듣고 이 세대가 느껴보지 못한 경험을 마주하는 의미있는 시간을 갖고있다.

학생들은 처음 봉사를 시작했을때 느꼈었던 낯설음이 점차 익숙해져감에 따라 봉사를 하며 사회에서의 개인의 역할과 책임에 대해서도 배워가는거 같다고 전했다.
반면. 봉사를 해오며 꾸준히 뵈었던 몇몇 어르신들이 건강상의 문제로 더 이상 노인회에 참석하지 않으실 때에는 걱정과함께 빈자리를 느끼게되고, 삶과 존재에 대한 소중함 또한 깨닫게되며 작게나마 어르신들을 도와 함께 할 수있다는 것에 감사를 느낀다고 말했다.

이번달 행사는 KALP 청소년들이 직접 사회와 진행을 맡아 진행하였으며, 사회를 해보는 것이 익숙하진않지만, 어르신들을 공경하는 태도와 말투, 그리고 리더쉽까지 성장시킬수있는 기회가 된거 같다며 봉사 후 소감을 전달했다.

On March 16, 2019 KAYLP students visited the East Bay Korean American Senior Center in Oakland. This month was the first time solely the students of odd month led the activities. The activities included stretching, quizzes, as well as craft.

The stretches were led by Jason Koo and Soomin Hong. Their stretches were not only creative but it allowed everyone to get their blood flowing before the quizzes. The quizzes consisted of two parts, Korean proverbs and mathematics, which was led by Junsong and Jaesong Lee. As for crafts this month, led by Julia Yoo and Soomin Hong, the KAYLP students decided to make paper hearts to show their love and appreciation for the elderly. Although the craft seemed a little hard at first, with the students help the elders faces lit up with delight.

The students learn a lot from the elderly through listening to their life stories and lessons. Not only, students also learn to respect and have leadership through their volunteering.
