EB노인회 연말잔치 - SFKorean 뉴스 - 로컬 뉴스

지난 2018년 12월 22일, 한 해의 연말을 맞이하여 East Bay 노인봉사회 회관에서 50여 분의 어르신들과 46명의 한미 청소년 리더십 프로그램(KAYLP, 총괄 디렉터 조진숙)의 학생회원들과 학부모들이 따뜻한 점심과 다과를 나누었다.

어느덧 3년을 달려온 이 연말행사에서는 지난 한 해동안 매달 첫째 주 토요일에 열렸던 정기모임을 통해 모아왔던 할머니, 할아버지들의 작품들을 KAYLP 회원들이 벽에 직접 걸며 어르신들을 맞이하였고 또 추억을 회상하는 시간을 가지기도 하였다.

쌀과 세면도구 세트를 나누는 간단한 선물 증정의 시간 후에는 점심식사의 시간을 가졌다. 이번 식사의 반찬과 미역국은 KAYLP 회원들이 행사를 위해 직접 준비를 하였기에 그 의미가 더욱 특별하게 다가왔다. 그리고 그 소식을 들으신 이영자 할머니께서는 “어머니들께서 정성껏 만들어주신 음식들이라 그런지 더욱 맛이 좋다” 며 화기애애한 분위기 속 덕담을 나누어 주셨다.

식사 후 이어진 치매예방 프로그램에서는 체조, 사칙연산 게임, 속담 맞추기 시간 등의 활동이 진행되었고, 끝으로는 특별히 김영숙 할머니와 14년간 소프라노를 맡아오신 남금지 할머니께서 간단한 축하공연으로 행사를 빛내주셨다.

약 3시간동안 진행되었던 연말행사를 통해 KAYLP 학생회원들은 어르신들에 대한 효의 의미를 되새기고 한국의 전통과 예절을 배우며 한 해의 마무리를 의미있고 따뜻하게 보내었다.

On Saturday December 22nd, 2018, the Korean American Youth Leadership Program (KAYLP led by CEO, Eunice Lee) visited the East Bay Korean American Senior Service Center for an annual end-of-the-year party. Members of KAYLP, who range from 7th graders to 12th graders, help the elderly on the first Saturday of every month.

Before the party began, the volunteers put up all of the art projects the seniors had completed over the year. The parent volunteers also prepared the entire meal for the seniors before the party. During the end-of-the-year party, 46 student and parent volunteers from KAYLP helped roughly 50 of the elderly with various games, activities, and distributed the food. The party was complete with a singing competition, math quiz for prizes, and gallery walk of the seniors’ artwork.

KAYLP’s current director Jin Sook Cho gave a speech to show respect to all of the seniors who take the time to visit the center regularly, and also to praise the student volunteers for doing such great community service to help the seniors. Joanna Kim-Selby, the president and executive director of the East Bay Korean American Senior Service Center, also thanked the young student volunteers of KAYLP for their regular commitment. She recognized the work they do monthly, cleaning the streets of Oakland, assisting the elders with arts and coloring, and that she was proud the East Bay Korean American Senior Service Center and KAYLP could collaborate to bring such services and hospitalities to it’s members.
